UNEMPLOYMENT INSURANCE WEEKLY CLAIMS REPORT

          SEASONALLY ADJUSTED DATA

In the week ending April 14, the advance figure for seasonally adjusted initial claims was 339,000, a decrease of 4,000 from the previous week's revised figure of 343,000. The 4-week moving average was 328,750, an increase of 5,250 from the previous week's revised average of 323,500.

The advance seasonally adjusted insured unemployment rate was 1.9 percent for the week ending April 7, unchanged from the prior week's unrevised rate of 1.9 percent.

The advance number for seasonally adjusted insured unemployment during the week ending April 7 was 2,531,000, an increase of 6,000 from the preceding week's revised level of 2,525,000. The 4-week moving average was 2,515,500, an increase of 9,000 from the preceding week's revised average of 2,506,500.  

UNADJUSTED DATA
The advance number of actual initial claims under state programs, unadjusted, totaled 315,776 in the week ending April 14, a decrease of 12,346 from the previous week. There were 268,472 initial claims in the comparable week in 2006.

The advance unadjusted insured unemployment rate was 2.0 percent during the week ending April 7, unchanged from the prior week. The advance unadjusted number for persons claiming UI benefits in state programs totaled 2,597,180, a decrease of 91,426 from the preceding week. A year earlier, the rate was 1.9 percent and the volume was 2,504,901.

Extended benefits were not available in any state during the week ending March 31.

Initial claims for UI benefits by former Federal civilian employees totaled 1,203 in the week ending April 7, an increase of 321 from the prior week. There were 1,694 initial claims by newly discharged veterans, an increase of 145 from the preceding week.

There were 15,844 former Federal civilian employees claiming UI benefits for the week ending March 31, an increase of 2,031 from the previous week. Newly discharged veterans claiming benefits totaled 23,313, a decrease of 34 from the prior week.

The highest insured unemployment rates in the week ending March 31 were in Alaska (4.6 percent), Michigan (4.2), Pennsylvania (3.3), Wisconsin (3.3), Rhode Island (3.2), New Jersey (3.1), Vermont (3.1), Massachusetts (3.0), Minnesota (2.8), and Oregon (2.8).

The largest increases in initial claims for the week ending April 7 were in California (+8,644), Pennsylvania (+7,834), New York (+3,842), Florida (+3,617), and Wisconsin (+3,141), while the largest decreases were in Missouri (-1,382), Michigan (-521), Puerto Rico (-435), Delaware (-255), and New Mexico (-115).
